Ultrasound education continues through your senior years — advanced applications, dedicated rotations, and the chance to teach.
Our senior residents manage the Trauma and Resuscitation areas, leading all medical resuscitations and responding to trauma activations. Ultrasound is central to caring for these patients.
Second-year residents complete a dedicated two-week ultrasound rotation, building on first-year applications with more advanced ones.
The senior elective is for residents interested in advanced EM ultrasound applications or AEMUS fellowship. It asks you to be proactive: obtaining studies, integrating ultrasound into your practice, and teaching junior residents and students.
Obtain images across all core emergency ultrasound applications and submit them to the ED ultrasound QA process. Track them on your scan logs (sticker on the log page, check off every scan) and turn them in at the end of the rotation.
Our sim center houses the HeartWorks TTE/TEE and ScanTrainer TA/TV simulators. Complete cases on both during the rotation.
Complete and pass all sections assigned to the rotation.
Review and complete QA forms on 25 studies performed by your peers. You'll receive these in your final week; images may not leave campus (HIPAA). QA reports and scans are due at the end of the rotation.
Write up an interesting, unique, or unexpected case with a teaching point: the presentation with ultrasound images, then the outcome with a brief literature review. It publishes as one of our Ultrasound for the Win! cases.
Help teach the EM interns and medical students, and attend all educational sessions scheduled during your rotation.
