Welcome to EM Ultrasound!
Welcome to residency and EM ultrasound! We are glad you are here and look forward to sharing the gospel of Point-of-care Ultrasound with you! The year starts with the onboarding month and basics of POCUS, but you will recieve more US content as the year continue through your Resus and Ortho rotations!
onboarding/ultrasound month Rotation:
This month we will focus on the basics of POCUS which we will expand upon as the year progresses with the hope that you will begin to include US into your practice of Emergency Medicine. We will utilize on-line didactics and quizzes, along with hands on scan sessions in both the Simulation Center and ED, simulation cases on a cardiac and pelvic ultrasound simulator and a structured assessment of ultrasound skills (OSAUS) performed on a standardized patient.
We will cover the following topics this month:
-
Ultrasound Physics and Knobology
-
E-FAST
-
Biliary
-
Renal
-
Abdominal Aorta
-
Basic Cardiac
-
Pelvic US for early pregnancy
-
Ultrasound Guided IV Placement (see USGPIV page for details)
In order to maximize our scan time, you must come prepared!
We will start each topic by scanning one another in the Simulation Center, then will scan patients in the ED in small groups.
We will be using a standard set of terms to communicate how to manipulate the US transducers as described by Bahner et al. Watch this video prior to our first scan session, so that we can communicate effectively!
All assignments are listed below and must be completed prior to the scan session. We utilize the SAEM AEUS Narrated Lecture Series for most didactics, unless otherwise stated. You will only be allowed to advance to the next lesson, once the prior lesson is complete. Please email Dr. Duran with any issues logging into the system.
